Convening: Blessings for a Balanced World

Celebrate the opening of the special exhibition Hopi Kachina Dolls: Blessings for a Balanced World during a daylong convening, bringing together Hopi artists, Indigenous arts leaders, and organizers in conversation and close looking. Organized with the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office, Blessings for a Balanced World is the first exhibition to examine the kachina dolls ( tithu ) tradition from the perspective of their recipients: Hopi girls and women. Tithu represent Katsinam, spirits who bring much-needed moisture and keep the world in balance for the Hopi, an Indigenous tribe in arid northeastern Arizona. The more than 50 tithu in the exhibition illustrate key phases in a Hopi woman’s life, from infancy to adulthood. Following an in-gallery blessing and tour of the exhibition, explore the process of rematriation—efforts led by Indigenous women to restore sacred relationships with ancestral land—across the fields of contemporary art, museum practice, and ecological initiatives.
