Boldly subverting traditional gender norms within kung fu cinema, Yeoh delivers a radiant performance, seamlessly blending masterly authority with endearing comedic vulnerability amid chaotic romantic mix-ups with Donnie Yen. Director Yuen Woo-ping enriches the story through inventive, prop-focused wirework—most memorably during the legendary “Tofu Fight,” in which Yeoh deflects heavy broadsword strikes with graceful footwork while preserving a delicate tray of bean curd. The result is a delightfully entertaining milestone in Hong Kong action cinema.
